Europe's new entry requirements: what EES and ETIAS mean

Argentines still do not need a visa for Europe, but entering the Schengen area is changing with two new systems.

EES: biometric registration

The Entry/Exit System replaces passport stamps with a digital record — photo and fingerprints taken on your first entry. It is rolling out gradually across European airports, so allow extra time at immigration on your first trip.

ETIAS: the electronic authorization

Once live (expected late 2026), travelers from visa-free countries — Argentina included — will need an online authorization before boarding, similar to the US ESTA. Expected cost is about €20, valid for three years, with a simple process: form, payment and approval within minutes in most cases.

What to do today?

For now, nothing: travel with a valid passport (six months' validity recommended) and a return ticket. When ETIAS becomes mandatory, you will see it here and in every Europe quote we prepare. Updated July 2026 — always check official sources before traveling.
