48 hours in Madrid: the perfect stopover itinerary

Day 1: the classics
Morning at the Prado, a walk through Retiro Park and tapas in Barrio de las Letras. Afternoon: Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor and sunset at the Temple of Debod. Dinner in a Cava Baja tavern.
Day 2: the local one
San Miguel market early, the Royal Palace and a stroll through Malasaña's shops. On Sundays, El Rastro flea market is a must. Close with a flamenco show.
Practical notes
The metro links the airport to downtown in 30 minutes and the multi card makes transport cheap. Many Europe fares allow a free Madrid stopover — ask us to build it in.
